I enjoyed reading Sam Johnson-Schlee’s Living Rooms, and some passages stuck with me.
The house plant is a way to let in a piece of beguiling non-human life without it threatening to undermine the foundations. But you should know that given half a chance they would take over the whole place. Perhaps this is why we like them — because we share with them an instinctual drive to escape the limits of our containers.
In order to make a room to live it will be necessary to remember all the ways in which life has already found its way into interior life. Every commodity in the home is an incendiary device that could yet be turned against the interest of capital, while each dwelling is a commodity, for someone, its value is appreciating with no correlation to its capacity to nourish a good life.
I dream of a home where I can rearrange the walls, one that I can move to a location convenient to me. With no exchange value at all, it is merely and excessively a place for life.
